This was upsetting, and not a little embarrassing. If anyone should know what to do it was me. I was used to such an active life. I mean, I did full Ironman Triathlons up to this point. Now I couldn't do anything.

Your bones become weaker. Your immune system becomes sluggish. Your injuries stop healing fully. They can't. They don't have enough of what they need to do so.
Your body literally becomes unable to fully repair itself, much like a mechanic who can only get half of the replacement parts he needs. He'll never fix the car. He doesn't have the parts necessary to do so.
But that’s not all. With a lack of protein your sex drive suffers. You become anxious or depressed. You become more likely to fall and suffer a hip fracture… and less likely to recover from it.
I’m sure you can see why proteins are so important... and why not having enough can be bad for your health -- in many ways. You may even be thinking of certain things right now that aren't healing fully, or causing you trouble. Things you've been trying to handle for a while now that you just can't. I understand. I was there too.
Alright. So where do all these important proteins come from? Don't they just come from our diet? Well, that’s not entirely accurate. The truth is that proteins are made by your body. And they're made from amino acids. Where your diet is important is in supplying these amino acids, the building blocks necessary to create proteins.

However, not all the amino acids are turned into proteins. Some of them are turned into glucose and are burned for energy.

So how can you find out if your body is using a protein for muscle or simply for excess glucose? Scientists have studied this very question in-depth and come to a conclusion: amino acids contain nitrogen, and when they’re turned into proteins, the nitrogen remains in your body as part of the protein. But when amino acids are converted into sugar, the nitrogen passes into your urine.
So if you want to know whether your amino acids are truly turning into protein or simply into sugar, you can measure the amount of nitrogen in your urine.
This measurement is called Amino Acid Utilization (AAU.) Here's how it works:
If a dietary protein has an AAU of 100%, that implies there is no nitrogen in your urine and that the body is using 100% of the amino acids in the food you ate to build bodily protein. This is ideal.
However, if a protein source has an AAU of 10%, that means your body is only using 10% of the amino acids to make bodily protein. That means the other 90% is being converted into sugar -- definitely not ideal!
So what’s the ideal source of dietary protein, the source with the highest AAU? Scientists have found it's breast milk, with an AAU of 49%. This makes sense, considering babies need an efficient protein source in their diet. But as we're not infants... it's not really an option for us. So what’s the next best source?
That would be whole eggs with an AAU of 47%. The crucial key? They must be whole eggs. Despite the popularity of egg whites amongst so-called health circles, without the yolk, an egg’s AAU drops a whopping 30% down to only 17%. This is because the egg yolk contains the essential amino acid methionine. So, without the yolk, an egg’s protein-building value is greatly diminished.
After whole eggs would be meat, poultry, and fish, all at an equal AAU of 32%. Beyond that, it’s a straight shot downhill….
Where are all of those expensive protein powders that are supposedly so great at building muscle? They come in at a disappointing 17% AAU. This is any protein powder, whether made of soy, dairy, or even egg. Again, that means that 83% of the protein is turned into sugar in your body.
Since we’re on the topic of health trends, many people have been hearing about spirulina as a popular protein supplement made of algae. Depending on the brand, however, spirulina has an AAU of between 0-6%. It’s almost worthless as a protein source.
But let's get back to the original topic: Why do people lose so much lean body mass as they get older? Well, there are three main reasons:
First, they're not eating enough protein. Second, they're eating the wrong sources of protein. And third, they're not digesting their protein — because it doesn't matter if you eat the right kind of protein if you can't digest it. You need to be able to break it down into the amino acids.
Where are all of those expensive protein powders that are supposedly so great at building muscle? They come in at a disappointing 17% AAU. This is any protein powder, whether made of soy, dairy, or even egg. Again, that means that 83% of the protein is turned into sugar in your body.

But I didn’t just go to a whole foods store and buy an amino acid product. Why? Because you can’t just take random amino acids and expect any results. You have to take the exact right amino acids in the correct ratios.
Let me explain. We've already covered the proteins are made up of amino acids. But what you might not know is that some of those amino acids were made by the body itself, and some it had to get from food sources because it isn't able to make them itself — 8 in particular. This is because a protein molecule isn't made up of 1 of each of the essential amino acids. It's a certain amount of this one and a certain amount that one, etc. Imagine a bicycle factory. And imagine you lots of handlebars and seats and frames.
But you only had two tires, enough for one bike. Well, it doesn’t matter how many of the other parts you have; if you only have one pair of tires, and each bicycle needs two, then you can only make one bicycle! The rest of the parts go to waste.
That’s what happens when you take amino acids in the wrong ratios. Remember when I said that when you eat meat your body only gets 32% of the protein?
That's because the amino acids in meat are not in the exact right ratios. There's only enough to turn 32% of them into protein. So the extra aminos get turned into sugar.
Okay, great. So that's that. Just take the 8 essential amino acids and we've got it, right? Not quite... You would think that if you took all 8 essential amino acids, your body would turn all of them to protein. That’s what I always thought, because that’s what we learned in medical school. But, like many things I learned in school, there’s a bit more to it.
