Your body is comprised primarily of protein. From muscle fibers to tissues.

To understand this better, I want you to think of your body as a bicycle for a moment. Now, the different parts of the bicycle would be amino acids. The tires, the frame, the handlebars, the chain and the seat would all be amino acids. They are all parts of the proteins that make up your body.

So let’s say you took your bike for a long ride through the mountains and crashed it into a tree. You would need to rebuild and repair this bicycle. You would need parts. Your body needs parts too, and those parts are amino acids.

Similarly, if I asked you to build a bicycle but then gave you 3 tires, 1 frame, 3 sets of handlebars, 6 chains and 4 seats, how many bicycles could you make?

One.

The rest of the parts (amino acids) would go to waste. You would have excess parts and could not use those parts because in order to build a bicycle, you need the right parts in the right ratios. Your body operates in much the same way.

When it comes to bodily function, waste can actually be quite harmful. A mis-utilization of amino acids is not only more common than one would think, but the norm in today's world of high carbohydrate diets.

Your body needs essential amino acids to build protein. This is known. But what about the ratios of each amino acid and why not just take more and more protein until your body just gets what it needs? Why not just keep gathering more parts to build this bicycle?

Chapter 3

Understanding Dietary Protein


When we eat, our bodies take the food we eat and assimilate part of it, store it if needed and break down the rest into usable forms. Depending on our diets, that food can consist of plants, animal proteins, fruits and more.

Within your body, there are systems designed to break down these proteins, carbohydrates and fats and convert them to usable substances. An example is the conversion of amino acids to protein. When you expend a high amount of energy, for example, the body is broken down to some degree and must rebuild itself. It does so by using protein.

So, you eat a handful of almonds. These almonds have fiber, protein and other substances that are broken down and converted to useful fuel or energy. Depending on what your body needs at the time, the almonds are converted and the waste is expelled.

This is what is known as protein utilization. It is how much of the protein your body is able to use.

OK, this chart shows protein utilization percentages vs nitrogen waste (what the amino acids turn into when not used for protein synthesis).

Surprising, right? Who would have thought it our protein utilization was so inefficient?

Whey, soy and casein protein are the worst with only about 16% being utilized.

Meat, poultry, fish and collagen supplements are next with 32%. Eggs (including the yolk) finish near the top - with 48%.

Breast milk comes in first, at 49% utilization, which makes sense, given that it is the most natural nutrition source for the body, produced to ensure an infant gets all the nutrition it needs, in the most usable form.

The body DOES NOT simply take collagen and make collagen. And it doesn't take protein and make protein.

Chapter 4

Why Eating More Protein Doesn't Work


When you consume dietary protein, including supplements such as whey and collagen, the body has to break it all down into its basic form — amino acids. It must then reconstitute them in the right ratio, to create protein synthesis.

However, if the amino acids are not in the right ratio in the protein source you consume (the bicycle example above), this is not efficient and your body only synthesizes a small amount of the protein you consume into actual, usable protein for the body.

In fact, based on a double-blind study*, it was found that most protein sources were extremely inefficient - including meats, fish and whey protein.

Now, what about those BCAAs or branched-chain amino acids?

Why Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) Don't Work


BCAAs are three specific amino acids: Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. They are very popular with bodybuilders.

And while there is nothing at all wrong with these three amino acids themselves, there is a simple problem with taking just these three.

In order to build protein, you must have ALL EIGHT of the Essential Amino Acids. Not just the BCAAs.

But why?

Because when you take BCAAs, the excess amino acids get used for fuel and turned into carbs, spiking your insulin levels and leading to potentially toxic levels of waste nitrogen (unused amino acids) which can be bad for your health.

What The Body Does With Unused Protein


There is nothing wrong with consuming vegetables, plants or any other foods. I love to eat, and so do a lot of other people.

But it is important to know what happens to food when you consume it.

There are two pathways in the body. Catabolic and Anabolic. In simple terms, Catabolic means un-used or wasted and Anabolic means simply used.

So when you eat a chicken breast, 32% of the amino acids from it get used (Anabolic). They are broken down and reconstituted as new muscle in your bicep, or tendons, skin, etc.

But 68%, after being broken down, are not able to be used (Catabolic) as the necessary ratios of each of the amino acids are not present. These leftovers are turned into nitrogen waste and eliminated from the body.

The goal here is to get as much utilization of what is taken in as possible, especially if you are trying to recover or repair the body.

There is extensive research on essential aminos, including their effects on the body. This isn’t just “theory” or an idea someone concocted or speculation.
