How I Discovered, Recovered and Still Compete at 71
My name is Dr. David Minkoff, M.D., and I am the Founder and Medical Director of one of the countries largest alternative medical clinics, treating a wide range of chronic disease as well as elite performance athletes. I am 71 years old and have competed in 43 full Ironman triathlons, qualifying for the Kona World Championships 8 times.
The story I'm about to share with you began with an injury but it wasn't until I discovered the truth about protein that I was able to finally heal.
You see, I not only discovered the cause of my injury, I found a way to strengthen my body from the inside out and do so without any medications. This information has been used to help thousands of my patients from every walk of life - from young kids to those in their 80s and 90s.
In this story I will share how I discovered it, recovered from injuries using it and how it allows me to compete in full Ironman Triathlons well into my 70s. The story is quite incredible, and it just may be the key your patients have been searching for.
Growing up in the Midwest, I was experienced the way in which animals were dispatched at a very early age. During a field trip to a processing plant, I saw cows becoming food. The experience left me never wanting to eat meat again and I remained a vegetarian for many, many years.
As time passed, I went to medical school, opened a practice and married my lovely wife Sue who is a Registered Nurse. We had 3 incredible children and I continued to run, bike and compete in Ironman triathlons.
One day during a run, I injured a hamstring. It seemed pretty "normal" at the time, or at least as normal as a hamstring injury could be. I didn't really think anything of it, just knew that I would have to rest it and hoped it wouldn’t sideline me for too long. Nothing out the ordinary. Par for the course.
Well, as it happened, the injury didn't just "heal" like I assumed it would. It persisted and lasted for months. I tried all kinds of alternative solutions, from chiropractic care, acupuncture, vitamins, therapy, rest and more. Nothing worked. My hamstring simply refused to heal.
Then I researched and discovered a blend of Essential Amino Acids that had a 99% utilization rate and that had amazing healing properties.
And what do you know? My injury healed.
Before I could stop myself, I pulled up everything I could find on amino acids and the role they play in our bodies. I was shocked. Since graduating medical school, I have always tested myself, studied more, learned as much as I could to help my patients. I've complete countless training and physiology courses. Yet, I had never found out about essential amino acids and why proteins are known as the "building blocks of the human body."
The Building Blocks of the Human Body
Protein is more than just a number on a package. It's the source of energy that our bodies use to build with, repair damage to cells with so much more. Without it, we would develop headaches, fatigue and eventually, our bodies would begin to break down fat stores followed by muscle fibers. This process, if properly managed, can result in a healthy weight decrease, but if improperly managed, can lead to excessive damage to vital organs and even cause death.
Protein is not only necessary, but a vital part of anyone's diet. That package is only telling a very small part of the story...
The essential amino acids are called “essential” because, although the body needs them to build protein, it can’t manufacture them by itself. So you have to get them from a food source.
Most of the human body is composed of protein. Muscles, bones, tissues, hair, teeth, skin, immune cells and so on. Water and fat are obviously not proteins, but most of the rest of your body is. So, if you're depleted in these, it will negatively affect your body's ability to build muscle, repair muscle and perform better.
Almost everything in your body relies on protein, ranging from your muscular system, skeletal system, digestive system, hormones, and so much more. Protein deficiency can even be behind hormonal imbalances.
You make or repair 50,000 proteins every day. And protein is made of amino acids. Thus, if the body cannot heal itself, it doesn't have enough protein. And if it doesn't have enough protein, it needs more essential amino acids.
If the body is deficient in essential amino acids, it simply cannot build or repair itself. It’s physically impossible. Incredible right? Well, the next discovery was even more incredible.
In my practice, I've often used the analogy of a bicycle. It goes like this, "If I gave you 2 sets of handlebars, one frame, 5 wheels, 9 pedals and 2 seats, how many bikes can you build?" The answer is “One” with lots of excess, un-used parts that are wasted.
The point is, essential amino acids must be in the right ratios to maximize their utilization by the body. Too many seats and not enough wheels equals no bike. Correct ratios of all components equals the most bikes possible.
Essential amino acids must be in the correct ratios in order to deliver maximum efficiency. I call these the perfect ratios - having at or above a 99% utilization.
And together, these 8 essential amino acids are called PerfectAmino.
Essential Amino Acids Build Protein
There are now a substantial number of scientific results that support the efficacy of essential amino acids. We are past conjecture and speculation. We have facts.
Here’s more on that:
It was found that you see significant muscle-preserving effects from essential amino acid supplements when ingested, especially during training in a fasted or ketotic state. This includes decreased indicators of muscle damage and maintenance of a healthy inflammatory response.
This means that if you took some essential amino acids, and consumed nothing else, you wouldn’t “cannibalize” as much lean muscle during a fasted workout session.
It would be the same for working out during or after a long intermittent fast, a bout of ketosis, a marathon, Ironman Triathlon or any other long event.
Then there is the study showing that consuming an essential amino acid mix after intense resistance training actually increased muscle protein growth and net muscle protein balance, indicating that taking these essential amino acids post-workout may stimulate faster muscle repair, recovery and growth.
Another study showed the potential for these Essential Amino Acids to cause muscle growth and regeneration because they are a potent rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) activator (activates cell growth), causing muscle satellite cell proliferation (for healing after injury). This gives them similar muscle building potential as to a large steak, but WITHOUT the large number of calories, preparation time or digestive strain.
Also, as you get older, your muscles produce less, or have a delayed ability to proliferate satellite cells in response to exercise. This is bad, especially when considering that satellite cells are essential for skeletal-muscle regeneration. However, it was found that those who consumed these Essential Amino Acids after resistance exercise had a far greater satellite cell proliferation capacity than those who didn’t supplement.
This is very important, especially if you're interested in anti-aging, since muscle mass and resistance training keep you young.
Lastly, there was a study with a 51 year old female who walked across the Taklimakan desert in China, consuming these Essential Amino Acids as her ONLY protein source. She finished the trek in 24 days after which she underwent numerous tests concluding that she showed no muscle loss and was in excellent health.
Dispelling A Common Misconception
BCAAs are three specific amino acids: Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. Just...3.
But in order to build protein, the body needs all 8 of the essential amino acids.
When just BCAAs are consumed, the excess gets used for fuel and turned into carbs, spiking your levels and leading to potentially toxic levels of waste nitrogen which can be bad for your health. In fact, their utilization rate is approximately 1%.
Unlike BCAAs, the 8 essential amino acids in a very specific ratio have a natural anabolic effect AND don’t spike your blood sugar. This is critical not only to muscle building, but also to recovery.
So utilization is the key to BCAAs, they simply are not enough to get the job done. No wheels.
Catabolic vs Anabolic Pathways
None of this is to say that protein from food is all bad. There is nothing wrong with going out for dinner or eating eggs in the morning. You should still consume dietary foods.
But it is important to know what happens to food when you consume it.
There are two pathways in the body. Catabolic and Anabolic. Catabolic means unused or wasted and Anabolic means simply used.
Let's start with the most common meat eaten, chicken. When you eat a chicken breast, 32% of the amino acids from it are utilized (Anabolic). They are broken down and reconstituted as new muscle in your bicep, tendons, skin, etc.
But 68%, after being broken down, are not able to be used (Catabolic) as the necessary ratios of each of the essential amino acids are not present. So these leftovers are turned into carbs, sugars and burned as fuel, stored as fat and result in nitrogen waste that must be eliminated from the body.
A similar situation occurs with eggs, meats and other proteins. Eggs, at 48% utilization, are the highest (with the exception of breast milk) common protein source. Although pretty good - at 48% - still more Catabolic or unused.
“The body of a person with optimum health should be able to deal with routine environmental stressors without breaking down, and should be able to recover quickly after physical insults. It should allow a person trouble free performance so that he or she can enjoy the maximum lifespan of his or her genetic endowment.” -- Dr. David Minkoff

The Perfect Protein
PerfectAmino® contains the eight essential amino acids the body needs to support and maintain its muscular, skeletal, enzymatic, and hormonal systems. The essential amino acids in PerfectAmino are in the exact proportions needed for maximum utilization by the body.
Many people know that protein is essential for optimum health, but most assume they are consuming enough from food. So why the need for an amino acid supplement? The simple answer is that – yes, you do get good quality from foods such as eggs, meat, fish and nuts but much of the protein in food is not converted into body protein – it just makes waste that the body has to get rid of plus extra calories.
Almost everyone is protein deficient without realizing it – it plays out as a nagging injury that won’t heal in the athlete, or brittle bones in the menopausal women, or constant colds in the child. Protein deficiency is very often something you are aware of, but you just can’t identify and neither does your doctor. Not getting enough protein may mean low hormones, or a low immune system and risk of disease or cancer. So what’s the solution? PerfectAmino is an amino acid supplement that is 99% utilized by the body to make protein. No other form of protein comes close!
PerfectAmino® Nothing else is utilized as well to make protein.
