Autoimmune disease is made up of more than 80 conditions where the body’s own immune system attacks healthy cells in the mistaken belief that they are harmful foreign invaders, like bacteria and viruses. Undigested proteins entering the body through a “leaky gut,” for example, are a common source of these unwanted “invaders,” representing an influx of substances circulating in the body that should not be.
The total surface area of the small intestine is equivalent to that of about two tennis courts, explains BodyHealth founder Dr. David Minkoff in his study of autoimmune disease. How can undigested proteins heavily impact such a large surface area, contributing to autoimmune conditions and damaged health?
“This membrane is only supposed to let in nutrients that are good for us, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fats. Food is only supposed to get through and into your body if a cell directly accepts it, and not in between them. This way, food gets taken up by the cell and completely passes through,” Dr. Minkoff states. “On the other side of the cell there are immune cells to screen it to ensure it is non-toxic. Then, the food encounters the blood and capillaries, which is then taken in by them and circulated into the liver and converted into proteins or other nutrients.”
Therefore, if someone has food allergies, bacteria, viruses or parasites in their intestines, the cells used to bring in food can become separated. This creates spaces for undigested proteins to come through, as opposed to directly through the cells themselves, and there is the root of the problem. The immune system identifies these proteins as foreign and attacks them in an attempt to protect itself, regardless of whether they’re from meats, fish or eggs.
“Our tissue looks a lot like the things that we eat, and the immune system could then proceed to attack our tissue, mistaking it for undigested proteins,” Dr. Minkoff adds. Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, bladder infections such as interstitial cystitis, multiple sclerosis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis all can stem from autoimmune infections where our immune systems attack us mistakenly and damage various parts of our systems.
Essentially, we need to prevent such “gut leaks” from occurring, safeguarding our bodies from potential risks associated with undigested proteins passing between cells. Regular treatment typically involves the use of powerful medications such as steroids or chemotherapy drugs that block the immune system.
