When the Body Attacks

When the Body Attacks: Understanding Autoimmune Disease

Autoimmune disease is made up of more than 80 conditions where the body’s own immune system attacks healthy cells in the mistaken belief that they are harmful foreign invaders, like bacteria and viruses. Undigested proteins entering the body through a “leaky gut,” for example, are a common source of these unwanted “invaders,” representing an influx of substances circulating in the body that should not be.

The Cause of Autoimmune Disease

The total surface area of the small intestine is equivalent to that of about two tennis courts, explains BodyHealth founder Dr. David Minkoff in his study of autoimmune disease. How can undigested proteins heavily impact such a large surface area, contributing to autoimmune conditions and damaged health?

“This membrane is only supposed to let in nutrients that are good for us, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fats. Food is only supposed to get through and into your body if a cell directly accepts it, and not in between them. This way, food gets taken up by the cell and completely passes through,” Dr. Minkoff states. “On the other side of the cell there are immune cells to screen it to ensure it is non-toxic. Then, the food encounters the blood and capillaries, which is then taken in by them and circulated into the liver and converted into proteins or other nutrients.”

Therefore, if someone has food allergies, bacteria, viruses or parasites in their intestines, the cells used to bring in food can become separated. This creates spaces for undigested proteins to come through, as opposed to directly through the cells themselves, and there is the root of the problem. The immune system identifies these proteins as foreign and attacks them in an attempt to protect itself, regardless of whether they’re from meats, fish or eggs.

“Our tissue looks a lot like the things that we eat, and the immune system could then proceed to attack our tissue, mistaking it for undigested proteins,” Dr. Minkoff adds. Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, bladder infections such as interstitial cystitis, multiple sclerosis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis all can stem from autoimmune infections where our immune systems attack us mistakenly and damage various parts of our systems.

Natural Supplemental Options

Essentially, we need to prevent such “gut leaks” from occurring, safeguarding our bodies from potential risks associated with undigested proteins passing between cells. Regular treatment typically involves the use of powerful medications such as steroids or chemotherapy drugs that block the immune system.

However, a safer and more effective way of supporting our body is to take in nutrients from foods that will essentially glue cells together, preventing openings or weak spots. Doing this enables the autoimmunity to disappear, allowing for you to recover.

“I had an 11-year old child that was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age two. When I saw her at age 11 she still had swollen knees, was being followed by a rheumatologist, was on steroids, and she was on methotrexate, the latter of which is a chemotherapy drug,” Dr. Minkoff notes. “When we saw her, we found that the source of her autoimmunity was partly food-related and partly Lyme disease. When we took care of her Lyme disease and handled her food, sealing up her intestine, her arthritis went away and she was able to wean off of her medication. It’s now been three years and she’s a normal, healthy teenager, active with no problems.”

Imagine yourself in a group of 100 people – roughly half of the number that will fit in the average movie theater. Now consider this: Roughly 15 of those people are actively suffering from a B12 deficiency. They are tired, weak, predisposed to illness, suffer from memory loss and nerve dysfunction. Some experience fairly severe symptoms, while others are gradually feeling worse – usually without even realizing it!

And no – this is not a joke or an exaggeration. According to the National Institute of Health, up to 15% of people are deficient in B12, which makes it one of the most common nutritional deficiencies.

With this in mind, we believe it is important that everyone becomes educated on this critical nutrient: What it is, what it does for your body, where to get it, how to avoid a deficiency, and then finally, the BEST ways to reap the benefits of having optimal B12 levels.
