This episode covers the following subjects:

  • 1:36 – Dr. Minkoff explains that it will take about 60 days to establish a new habit or routine. If you want to exercise, within about 60 days, your exercise routine will become a healthy habit that you enjoy.
  • 3:02 – A discussion about how living long and healthy is not about your cholesterol or blood pressure, but the function of your lungs. Dr. Minkoff says that to increase your pulmonary health, you need to exert yourself. He has his patients walk for 5 minutes 3 times per week, and for the last minute, walk faster, so they feel out of breath, and then go slow again. Work it up to doing this eight times throughout a 20-25 minute walk, and within a few months your lung function will improve along with your fitness.
  • 5:19 – Dr. Minkoff discusses how half of fitness is muscle strength, which leads to stronger bones. He advises that pushups, sit-ups, and squats should be performed on alternate days from the walking exercise, at a level that is achievable for your physical condition. He says to do these exercises until you are tired, and then stop, which could be only a few minutes at first. Within 60 days, he says you will achieve far more strength and will be easily able to do 20 or 30 pushups or whatever exercises you have chosen.
  • 6:47 – Dr. Minkoff discusses how the importance lies in pushing yourself a little harder, whether on an elliptical trainer, stationary bike, or walking. If you challenge your body and have good nutrition, your body will change and get stronger. If you want to get older and feel and look young, this is the approach that keeps you healthy and strong as you age.
  • 7:07 – Frankie Boyer discusses how a lack of enough protein can lead to depression, anxiety, cancers, autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis could be due to a lack of protein, and the critical importance of protein in your diet. She recommends Dr. Minkoff’s free online book, The Search for the Perfect Protein, and the BodyHealth product, PerfectAmino.
